Regimental Battle Honours of the Great War

The sheer scale of the Great War led to a previously unheard of number of honours being awarded and it was simply impractical to emblazon every one of them on the Regimental Colour.   In September 1922 it was ordered that Regiments should select up to 10 Honours to be emblazoned on their Regimental Colours along with previous awards, up to a total of 24.   This led to a storm of protest, since many Regiments would have had to remove previous Honours.    The order was therefore amended the following December, to allow each Infantry Regiment to select up to 10 Honours to be emblazoned on its King's/Queen's Colour, Honours from other conflicts continuing to be displayed on the Regimental Colour.

Regimental History

In the Great War the Herefordshire Regiment was unusual in that it had no units of the Regular Army.  All of the Regimental Battalions shown below were of the Territorial Force (TF).

1/1st Battalion

At the outbreak of war in August 1914 the Battalion was based at Hereford, part of the Welsh Border Brigade in the Welsh Division.   The Battalion was moved to its operational location on mobilisation to Pembroke Dock but was soon moved to Oswestry, and by the end of the month was based at Irchester and Rushden in Northamptonshire.   The Battalion was moved on to Bury St Edmunds in December 1914.
On 24th April 1915 the Battalion was placed under command of the North Wales Brigade in the same Division, and then moved to Bedford in May 1915.
On 13th May 1915 the North Wales Brigade became 158th Brigade in 53rd (Welsh) Division TF and on 16th July 1915 the Battalion embarked at Devonport on SS Euripedes, with 29 officers and 969 other ranks.  On reaching Port Said the Battalion was reduced to 25 officers and 750 other ranks and these men went on to land at ‘C’ beach at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli at 7.20am on 9 August 1915. Their Divisional artillery had been left behind in England under orders for the BEF in France, and the Division had no other wheeled transport and no horses.
On 12th December 1915 the Battalion evacuated from Gallipoli and moved to Egypt for in preparation for combat operations in the Palestine Campaign.
The Battalion left the Division on 1st June 1918 and moved via Italy to France, landing at Taranto (Italy) on 22nd June 1918.   The unit arrived at Proven in Belgium 30th June 1918 and came under command of 102nd Brigade in 34th Division.

For their part in the landing at Suvla Bay on 9 August 1915 the Battalion was "Mentioned in Despatches" by General Sir Ian Hamilton. …….the 1st/1st Herefordshire, which attacked with impetuosity and courage between Hetman Chair and Kaslar Chair about Azmak Dere on the extreme right of his line.

2/1st Battalion

This Battalion was formed at Hereford in September 1914 as the Regimental Second Line Battalion forming the depot and training establishment for the Regiment and providing trained reinforcements for the 1/1st Battalion.
In December 1914 the Battalion moved to Aberystwyth and in April 1915 moved on to Northampton where it came under orders of 205th Brigade in 68th Division.  In May and June 1915 the Battalion worked on North London defences in the Billericay area.  The Battalion moved to Bedford in July 1915 and on to Lowestoft in November 1915.  The Battalion moved on to Herringfleet, Suffolk, in May 1917 and was  finally disbanded on 10 September 1917.

3/1st Battalion

Formed in Hereford in February 1915 as the Regimental depot and training establishment for the Regiment and reinforcement unit for the 1/1st and 2/1st Battalions.  The Battalion moved to Abergavenny and by September 1915 was based at Oswestry.  Renamed 1st (Reserve) Battalion Herefordshire Regiment on 8th April 1916 it then merged with 4th (Reserve) Battalion of the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry at Swansea on 24th July 1917.

A detailed history of the Herefordshire Regiment can be can be viewed here and in the book "Manu Forti: History of the Herefordshire Regiment - 1860-1967" by J T B Hill.

The Debt Of Honour Register

Commonwealth War Graves Commission

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) was established by Royal Charter in 1917 as the Imperial War Graves Commission, and pays tribute to the 1,700,000 men and women of the Commonwealth forces who died in the two World Wars.   It is a non-profit-making organisation founded by Sir Fabian Ware.

The CWGC's principles are:

  • Each of the dead should be commemorated by name on the headstone or memorial.

  • Headstones and memorials should be permanent.

  • Headstones should be uniform.

  • There should be no distinction made of account of military or civil rank, race or creed.

Since its inception, the Commission has constructed 2,500 war cemeteries and plots, erecting headstones over graves and, in instances where the remains are missing, inscribing the names of the dead on permanent memorials.   Over one million casualties are now commemorated at military and civil sites in some 150 countries.

Together with the tasks of structural and horticultural maintenance, the CWGC is charged with keeping records of the 1.75 million Commonwealth war dead.   At each cemetery and memorial you will find a register showing the service details and, in some cases, family details, of the men and women buried or commemorated there.   Much of the Commission’s day-to-day work is concerned with maintaining the integrity of the casualty database, the electronic version of the records, which can be accessed via the Debt of Honour Register (DoHR).

In December 2020, the Commission reviewed its policy on amendments to the Casualty Database.   One of the outcomes of the review was that they would no longer add awards to the database where there is no entitlement to post-nominal letters.   Therefore the recording of "Mentioned in Despatches", for instance, would no longer be carried out.

Some apparent inaccuracies in the records of Officers of the Herefordshire Regiment contained in the DoHR may have been found.   The Webmaster will investigate and report these errors to the CWGC as the project/website is progressed.

Below is a brief summary of apparent inaccuracies discovered so far and action taken or planned to take.
