Notes: 1. OLDHAM as originally buried in a battlefield grave near "Hill 60" and was reburied at Oosttaverne Wood Cemetery in May 1926. 2. ALLATT died of heart failure. He was involved in the actions around the Easter Rising. He retired from the DCLI on 1st January 1899 and volunteered for and was appointed as a Draft Conducting Officer on 2nd June 1915. 3. HAMMANS had retired from the Army in 1894 but served as a Retired Officer at Bodmin in a training role. He was appointed as Recruiting Officer at Bletchley in 1915. 4. RENDALL was wounded near Thiepval Wood on 6th July 1916. The Battalion War Diary states that he was taken to a German dugout and it was impossible to bring him back when the trench was evacuated. The Cemetery is a concentration cemetery made after the war when graves were brought in from the surrounding area. 5. LOMAX was originally buried in a battlefield grave near "Nordwerk", west of Pozieres, and reburied in Pozieres British Cemetery in May 1918. 6. ALDERSON was accidentally killed during bombing practice at Grantham. 7. MITCHELL was wounded northeast of Le Sars, Somme on 5th November 1916. 8. BYERS was killed when he lost control of the aircraft he was piloting , a Curtiss JN3, at Beaulieu, Hants, whilst serving with 16th (Reserve) Squadron Royal Flying Corps. 9. HALL was killed in an aircraft accident near Tadcaster whilst serving with 57th Squadron Royal Flying Corps. 10. STEVENSON was killed over Ypres whilst an observer in a combat air patrol with 2Lt H Bowden in a Sopwith 1/2 Strutter. 11. GRAY was killed in an aircraft accident at Gosport, Hants, whilst attached to 28th Squadron Royal Flying Corps from 3rd (Reserve) Battalion DCLI. 12. CHAPPEL was killed in an aircraft accident near Aboukir. He was solo flying a BE2c which dived to the ground out of control. 13. BAKER was originally buried in a battlefield grave to the east of "Queen's Corner", near Gouzeaucourt, and reburied in Gouzeaucourt New British Cemetery in May 1920. 14. TONKING was wounded at Ridge Wood, near Voormezeele on 28th May 1917. 15. WODEHOUSE was an observer in a RE.8 aircraft, piloted by Capt A L MacDonald, MC, on a reconnaissance mission, when it was shot down over Ypres. 16. WRIGHT was an observer in a RE.8 aircraft, piloted by Lt H L Devlin, on a reconnaissance mission, when it was shot down over Ypres. 17. WILKINSON was piloting a SE5a and was shot down on combat patrol over Halluin, south of Menin, Belgium and buried in Halluin German Military Cemetery. He was re-buried in Pont du Hem Military Cemetery in May 1924. 18. JENKINS was killed whilst flying when he crashed his aircraft, a BE2e, into the ground at night. 19. BALL had previously served with Grenadier Guards and Royal Fusiliers before transfer to DCLI in 1916. He died at the Prince of Wales Hospital Marylebone. 20. BLANCHARD was taken as a POW on 2nd December 1917 at La Vacquerie. He was originally buried in Plot 18, Row 3, Grave 3, but re-interred at Plot IX.B.6 in 1923. 21. HILL was originally buried in a battlefield grave to the north of Cugny, south west of St Quentin, and re-buried at Grand-Seraucourt British Cemetery in August 1920. 22. HAMILTON was killed in an aircraft accident on 13th July 1918 near Tadcaster, Yorks, when his aircraft, a Sopwith F1 Camel broke up in mid-air. 23. JENKIN died of wounds after being injured whilst an Observer in DH9 aircraft during a mission. 24. PEACOCK was shot through the head whilst an Observer in a DH9 during a mission. 25. HUMPHRIES was wounded by shellfire and died an hour later (according to Battalion War Diary). 26. BURROWS was originally buried in a battlefield grave to the south east of Le Sars and re-buried in Warlencourt British Cemetery in July 1920. 27. BOSWELL died of influenza/pneumonia. 28. WIDDOWS was appointed to Rail Transport Officer duties and died of ? 29. BENNETT died of influenza/pneumonia. 30. HOLDER died of influenza/pneumonia. He had transferred to the General List on 27th May 1918 for duty with the Oxfordshire Volunteer Reserve. 31. BUCKMASTER died of influenza/pneumonia. He had previously served with 7th Battalion DCLI. 32. BROWN died of nephritis. His grave in the NW Frontier cannot be maintained by the CWGC. |
