Battalion History

The 4th Battalion TF was formed in 1908, part of the Haldane Reforms, when the 1st and 2nd Volunteer Battalions of the Regiment were merged to form the 4th Battalion of the new Regimental Territorial Force, based at Longden Coleham in Shrewsbury, under command of the Welsh Division TF.   On the declaration of war on 4th August 1914 the Battalion was sent to Cardiff, its initial mobilisation location, part of the Severn Defences Command.   On 4th September 1914 it was redeployed to Sittingbourne for duty with the Medway Defences and was readied for departure to India.   Before the Battalion departed it was reorganised, forming 1/4th Battalion TF and 2/4th Battalion TF (the 1/4th Battalion made up of personnel who had signed the Imperial Service Order for overseas service and the 2/4th Battalion of men who had not signed the ISO and those medically unfit for service overseas).

The 1/4th Battalion sailed for India 29th October 1914 from Southampton under command of the Middlesex Brigade of the Home Counties Division TF, arriving at Bombay on 1st December 1914.   The Battalion was posted to Singapore on 10th February 1915, with a detachment going to the Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal, and another detachment was sent to Hong Kong.   The Battalion was concentrated at Singapore on 13th April 1917 for duty at Colombo, arriving on 19th April 1917.   The Battalion was recalled to UK for duty with the BEF and arrived at Le Havre, after a short stop at Southampton, on 29th July 1917.   The Battalion was placed under command of 190th Brigade, 63rd (Royal Naval) Division 18th August 1917 and was transferred to 56th Brigade, 19th (Western) Division on 4th February 1918 where it stayed for the remainder of the war.   The Battalion was reconstituted after the war as 4th Battalion TF.

The Battalion lost 369 soldiers during the war.

Regimental History

The King's Light Infantry (Shropshire Regiment) was formed on 1 July 1881 as part of the Childers Reforms, as the County Regiment of Herefordshire and Shropshire.   It was renamed as The King's (Shropshire Light Infantry) on 10 March 1882.   The Regiment was an amalgamation of the 53rd (Shropshire) Regiment of Foot and the 85th (King's Light Infantry) Regiment of Foot, which became the Regular 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Regiment.  The 1881 reforms also redesignated the Militia and Rifle Volunteers units within the Regimental District as Battalions of the Regiment.   Accordingly, the Shropshire Militia and Royal Herefordshire Militia became the 3rd and 4th (Militia) Battalions respectively, and the 1st and 2nd Shropshire Rifle Volunteer Corps became the 1st and 2nd Volunteer Battalions.  The 1st Herefordshire (Herefordshire and Radnorshire) Rifle Volunteer Corps was also affiliated as a Volunteer Battalion, without change of title.   In 1908, as part of the Haldane Reforms, the two Militia Battalions were merged to form the 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion and the 1st and 2nd Volunteer Battalions were merged to form the 4th Battalion of the Regimental Territorial Force at Longden Coleham in Shrewsbury. At the same time, the Herefordshire Rifle Volunteer Corps became independent as the Herefordshire Regiment (TF).
