Notes: 1. MILES was wounded at "E Lines", northeast of Fauquissart on 29th December 1914. 2. COLVILLE was the 16th Infantry Brigade Machine Gun Officer. 3. BAUSOR may well have been buried near St Eloi but the grave was later lost. 4. THOMAS was killed during an operational flight when his aircraft, a Martynside G.100 fighter-bomber, No 7267, was shot down over German lines. 5. FRENCH was wounded near Givenchy on 1st July 1916. 6. BOUCHER was wounded near Mailly-Maillet on 15th October 1916. 7. DIBBEN was detached from 7th Battalion. 8. DENNETT was killed during a training flight, when his aircraft, a BE2e, collided with another aircraft in mid-air. 9. MORGAN was killed during an aerial patrol when his aircraft, a BE2e, was brought down by anti-aircraft fire. He was the observer in the aircraft which was piloted by Lt G C Stones, who was also killed. 10. ATCHISON was originally buried in a battlefield grave near "Stirling Castle", west of Inverness Copse, and was reburied at the Menin Road South Cemetery in February 1920. 11. HIGGINS was originally buried in a battlefield grave at Bweho Chini, near the River Mbemkuru, south of Dar Es Salaam and was reburied initially in Lindi Cemetery in the early 1970s then to Dar Es Salaam War Cemetery in 1975. German East Africa is now Tanzania. 12. BATTYE was originally buried in a battlefield grave at the northwest corner of Bourlon Wood and reburied at Moeuvres in March 1920. 13. COTTON died of pnuemonia. 14. CORBET was killed during an operational flight, when his aircraft, a Bristol F2b fighter, was brought down near Douai. 15. GUBBINS was lost at sea when HMT Normandy was torpedoed and sunk by U-90 in the English Channel, off Cap de la Hague, west of Cherbourg. He was serving as a A.A.Q.M.G (Assistant Adjutant & Quartermaster General) on the Staff of HQ BEF. 16. BULMER took his own life in a hotel in Paddington. Prior to serving with the RFC he had previously seen active service with 7th Battalion and was awarded the MC for conspicuous bravery in action. 17. SWIFT-O'FFLAHERTIE was killed whilst flying during a training flight at the Almaza Aerodrome. A Board of Inquiry found that he was recklessly flying his aircraft, a DH6. At the time of the accident he was attached to 1st (Garrison) Bn The King's (Liverpool Regiment). 18. MEALING was killed during an operational flight, when his aircraft, an SE5 fighter was brought down in unknown circumstances. He had scored 14 victories and was considered to be an "Ace". 19. GALLIMORE was serving in 118th Brigade Composite Battalion. 20. WELLINGS was wounded at Acheux, southeast of Doullens, on 19th June 1918. 21. HANBURY-SPARROW was killed in action at Baku (then part of Azerbaijan). The Battalion was part of "Dunsterforce". 22. BARNETT was killed in a training flight, when his aircraft, Sopwith Camel B7906, failed to recover after a loop and crashed into the ground in a wood near Hailsham. He was commissioned into the KSLI as a 2Lt on 21st August 1917. 23. CANNON was killed in a training flight, when he lost control of his Sopwith Pup aircraft and it crashed into the ground from about 1,000 feet. 24. HERBERT was originally buried in a battlefield grave near "Quandary Farm", east of Menin and was reburied in Hooge Crater Cemetery in August 1919. 25. DAVIES was originally buried in a battlefield grave to the south of Bossuyt and reburied at Tournai in April 1920. The 1/7th Battalion Cheshire Regiment War Diary for 25th October 1918 believes he, with others, were taken POW by the Germans. 26. UNWIN was killed during an operational flight near the Kronstadt Naval Base. His aircraft was brought down, possibly by ground fire, and crashed into the sea. 27. WHITFIELD died of ? He was commissioned into the KSLI on 31st July 1918 and was seconded to the Tank Corps on 21st November 1918. |
