Battalion History

The 2nd Battalion Welsh Regiment was formed on 1st July 1881 as part of the Childers Reforms, from the 69th (South Lincolnshire) Regiment.   The 2nd Battalion then performed Garrison and Security duties overseas in Egypt, Sudan, India and Ireland and was based at Bordon, part of 3rd Brigade, 1st Division at the outbreak of the Great War on 4th August 1914.   The 3rd Brigade moved from Bordon to Southampton on 12th August 1914 in preparation for embarkation on HMT Braemar Castle, landing at le Havre on 13th August 1914.   The Brigade concentrated in the Leschelles area, southeast of Le Cateau in preparation for operations against an advancing German Army.  The 1st Division remained in France and Flanders throughout the war and a detailed history of the major actions of the Division in the Great War can be viewed here.   At the Armistice the Battalion was in rest billets at Fresnoy-le-Grand and moved to Bazuel, southeast of Le Cateau in preparation for 1st Division's march to the Rhine.   The march commences on 15th November 1918 and the German frontier, east of Braunlauf, is reached on 18th December.   Flamersheim, southwest of Bonn is reached on 24th December where the Battalion remains until 29th March 1919 carrying out Garrison and Local Security duties, military training, educational lectures and sport.  Demobilisation commences on 28th December 1918 with 8 men, all miners, leaving for the UK.   Men begin to leave now at regular intervals and the strength of the unit at 31st January 1919 is 24 officers and 494 men.   On 3rd March 1919 a draft of 9 officers and 136 men arrive from the disbanded 13th and 14th Battalions Welsh Regiment and on 24th March 1919, 24 officers and 314 men are posted to 1/6th Battalion Welsh Regiment, the remaining personnel, 4 officers and 56 men, forming the cadre of the 2nd Battalion.   The cadre departed for Fermeries, near Mons, on 29th March 1919 to take over the duties and equipment of 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Regiment in the 63rd (Royal Naval) Division area.   The Battalion is later reconstituted and re-equipped as a regular Battalion in the UK in 1920, brought up to strength and posted to Ireland.

Regimental History

The Welsh Regiment was formed on 1 July 1881 as part of the Childers Reforms which saw an amalgamation of the 41st (Welch) Regiment of Foot and the 69th (South Lincolnshire) Regiment of Foot.   These two units became the Regular 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Regiment, with the Regimental Depot based at Maindy Barracks, Cardiff.  The 1881 reforms also redesignated the Militia and Rifle Volunteer Corps (RVC) units within the Regimental District of Carmarthenshire, Glamorgan and Pembrokeshire as Battalions of the Welsh Regiment (1st Pembrokeshire RVC, 1st Glamorganshire RVC, 2nd Glamorganshire RVC and the 3rd Glamorganshire RVC).  The Militia unit of the Regiment was the Royal Glamorgan Light Infantry Militia.  In 1908, as part of the Haldane Reforms, the Militia Battalion was reorganised and restructured forming the 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion and the four RVC Battalions formed the 4th Battalion, 5th Battalion, 6th Battalion and 7th (Cyclist) Battalion of the Regimental Territorial Force.   After the Declaration of War on 4th August 1914 and up to 1st June 1918, the Welsh Regiment had formed 17 Service/Reserve Battalions, a further 9 Territorial Force Battalions and 3 Graduated/Young Soldier Battalions.
