Battalion History

The 24th (Pembroke and Glamorgan) Battalion TF was formed In Egypt on 2nd February 1917 from personnel of the Welsh Regiment, and the dismounted Glamorgan Yeomanry and Pembroke Yeomanry Regiments and was assigned to 231st Brigade, 74th (Yeomanry) Division.  On 14 January 1917 the GOC Egyptian Expeditionary Force, Sir Edmund Allenby, gave orders for the reorganisation of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Dismounted Brigades of Yeomanry – at the time all were serving on Suez Canal Defences – and for their conversion and re-designation as the 229th, 230th and 231st Infantry Brigades.  These Brigades were then organised into 74th Division, which began to assemble on 4th March 1917 near El Arish. The Division fought throughout the Palestine Campaign and were part of the force that took Jerusalem in December 1917.   On 3rd March 1918 the 74th Division received a warning order to prepare to leave Palestine and move to France.  Embarkation began at Alexandria on 29 April 1918 and the first units landed at Marseilles on 7 May 1918 and entrained for the north.   Concentration was completed in the area of Rue (near Abbeville) by 18 May 1918 and the Division was held in GHQ Reserve.   On 14th July 1918 the Division took over a sector of front line near Merville and then remained in France and Flanders for the rest of the war.

Regimental History

The Welsh Regiment was formed on 1 July 1881 as part of the Childers Reforms which saw an amalgamation of the 41st (Welch) Regiment of Foot and the 69th (South Lincolnshire) Regiment of Foot.   These two units became the Regular 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Regiment, with the Regimental Depot based at Maindy Barracks, Cardiff.  The 1881 reforms also redesignated the Militia and Rifle Volunteer Corps (RVC) units within the Regimental District of Carmarthenshire, Glamorgan and Pembrokeshire as Battalions of the Welsh Regiment (1st Pembrokeshire RVC, 1st Glamorganshire RVC, 2nd Glamorganshire RVC and the 3rd Glamorganshire RVC).  The Militia unit of the Regiment was the Royal Glamorgan Light Infantry Militia.  In 1908, as part of the Haldane Reforms, the Militia Battalion was reorganised and restructured forming the 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion and the four RVC Battalions formed the 4th Battalion, 5th Battalion, 6th Battalion and 7th (Cyclist) Battalion of the Regimental Territorial Force.   After the Declaration of War on 4th August 1914 and up to 1st June 1918, the Welsh Regiment formed 17 Service/Reserve Battalions, a further 9 Territorial Force Battalions and 3 Graduated/Young Soldier Battalions.
