Battalion History |
|
12th (Service) Battalion. Formed at Chester in September 1914 as
part of K3. The
Battalion assembled and concentrated at Seaford and came under command
of 22nd Division as Army Troops. Intensive individual and
collective training was carried out before the Battalion was moving to
Eastbourne in December 1914.
In February 1915 the Battalion was transferred to 66th Brigade of the
same Division before moving to Aldershot in June 1915 to complete the
training for combat operations with the BEF in France and Flanders. The Battalion entrained at Aldershot on 6th September 1915 for Folkestone with a strength 25 officers and 823 men, arriving at Boulogne in the evening of the 6th September. The Battalion was then moved by rail and route march over the next couple of days to Mailly, near Achiet, arriving on 11th September 1915. On the 12th the Battalion was temporarily attached to 12th Brigade, 4th Division for instruction in trench warfare. On 28th September the Battalion first took over trenches in the front line at Foucaucourt from the 14th Battalion The King's (Liverpool Regiment). The Battalion remained in the Foucaucourt/Harbonnieres area unit 22nd October 1915 but in the meantime the 22nd Division was selected to join the British Salonika Force. The Battalion were moved to Proyart/Fouilloy on 22nd October in preparation for embarking at Marseilles for Salonika on 28th October. By 5th November 1915 the Battalion had assembled in Salonika where it remained for the rest of the war. A detailed history of the 22nd Division's actions and battles during the war can be viewed here. A GALLANT CHESHIRE BATTALION. AWARDED THE CROIX DE GUERRE WITH PALM. On Sunday, March 2, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, British Salonika Force, on behalf of General Franchet d'Esperey, the G.O.C. in Command of Allied Armies in the Orient, presented the 12th (Service) Battalion Cheshire Regiment with the Croix de Guerre with Palm, in recognition of their gallant conduct and magnificent attack on September 18, 1918. The Battalion was mentioned in a French Army Order as "a marvelous Battalion, which has shown the finest qualities of courage, enthusiasm, and endurance." The order continues :- " On September 18, 1918, gallantly led by Lt.-Col. the Hon. A. R. Clegg·Hill, D.S,O. (O.R.), in person, it rushed to the assault of a strongly fortified position, showing a magnificent spirit of self- sacrifice. In spite of a cross-fire from artillery, trench mortar, and machine guns, and of the loss of its Commanding Officer, who fell mortally wounded, the Battalion continued to advance, making light of its heavy casualties, and thereby giving a glorious example of heroism, and the loftiest traditions of the British Army." In the December 1918 Dispatch of General Sir G. Milne, G.O.C. in Command, British Salonika Force, the Battalion is again mentioned for its attack on the " P" Ridge in September. "After severe fighting the 12th Battalion Cheshire Regiment succeeded in reaching the third line of trenches. At this point they came under a devastating machine gun fire, and, unable to make further progress, were eventually compelled to fall back to their original position. In their heroic attempt they had lost about 65 per cent. of their strength, including Lieutenant Colonel the Hon. A. R, Clegg-Hill, D.S.O., who fell at the head of the Battalion." |

Regimental History |
|
The Cheshire Regiment was formed on 1st July 1881 as part of the Childers Reforms, which saw the 2 separate Battalions of the 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment of Foot re-titled to become the regular 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Regiment, with the Regimental Depot based at Chester Castle. The 1881 reforms also added the Rifle Volunteer Corps (RVC) and Militia units within the Regimental District of the County of Cheshire to the Regimental Establishment as numbered Battalions of the Regiment. The Rifle Volunteer Corps (RVC) units were the 1st Cheshire Rifle Volunteer Corps, the 2nd (Earl of Chester's) Cheshire RVC, the 3rd Cheshire RVC, the 4th Cheshire (Cheshire and Derbyshire) RVC and the 5th Cheshire RVC. The Militia units of the Regiment were the 1st Royal Cheshire Light Infantry Militia and the 2nd Royal Cheshire Militia.
In 1908, as part of the Haldane Reforms, the Militia Battalions were reorganised and restructured forming the 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion and the RVC Battalions were retitled as Battalions of the Regimental Territorial Force. The 1st Cheshire RVC became the 4th Battalion TF, the 2nd (Earl of Chester's) Cheshire RVC and the 3rd Cheshire RVC amalgamated and became the 5th (Earl of Chester's) Battalion TF, the 4th Cheshire RVC became the 6th Battalion TF and the 5th Cheshire RVC became the 7th Battalion TF.
After the Declaration of War on 4th August 1914 and up to 1st June 1918, the Cheshire Regiment had formed, disbanded or reconstituted 35 Territorial Force, Service, Garrison, Labour, Reserve, Graduated and Young Soldier Battalions. |
