Battalion History

On 1 July 1881 as part of the Childers Reforms, the 2nd Battalion was formed from within the existing 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment of Foot.   On the Declaration of War on 4th August 1914 the Battalion was stationed at Jubbulpore, India and was ordered to return to the UK arriving at Devonport on 24th December 1914.   The Battalion was placed under command of 84th Brigade, 28th Division at Winchester.   On 17th January 1915 the Battalion disembarked at Le Havre and began its move to Ypres area arriving there on 2nd February.   On 23rd February 1915 the 84th Brigade was transferred to 5th Division serving in Bailleul, Petit Pont, Romarin, Ploegsteert, Kemmel, Dranoutre and Lindenhoek before the Brigade was returned to 28th Division on 6th April 1915.

The Battalion served in the Ypres sector between 16th April and 12th July before being moved to the Kemmel area.   By 27th September the Battalion was stationed at Sailly la Bourse.   Between 1st and 3rd October the Battalion was in action at the Hohenzollern Redoubt before being withdrawn to Vermelles before moving to a rest camp Busnes on 6th October.   On 18th October the Battalion marched to Hinques, north of Bethune, then to Le Quesnoy on 19th October where orders were received that all leave to be cancelled.   On 20th October nine heavy draft horses were replaced with eighteen light draft horses and the Battalion was placed on one hour notice to move.   On 21st October the Battalion was marched to Fouquereull railway station and entrained for Marseilles, arriving there on 24th October.   At Marseilles Docks the Battalion embarked on SS "Ivernia", strength 20 officers and 518 men.   A further 1 officer, 31 men and 40 horses of the Transport Section were embarked on SS "Shropshire".   The Battalion reached Alexandria on 29th October disembarked and concentrated on 30th October in preparation for the move by train to Marmoura Camp, about 12 miles from the docks.  (Here the Battalion War Diary contained in WO 95/2276/2 ends).

The Battalion remained with the 28th Division for operations in the Salonika area and a history of these battles and operations can be viewed here.

After the war the Battalion was reconstituted as a Regular Battalion.

Regimental History

The Cheshire Regiment was formed on 1st July 1881 as part of the Childers Reforms, which saw the 2 separate Battalions of the 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment of Foot re-titled to become the regular 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Regiment, with the Regimental Depot based at Chester Castle.

The 1881 reforms also added the Rifle Volunteer Corps (RVC) and Militia units within the Regimental District of the County of Cheshire to the Regimental Establishment as numbered Battalions of the Regiment.   The Rifle Volunteer Corps (RVC) units were the 1st Cheshire Rifle Volunteer Corps, the 2nd (Earl of Chester's) Cheshire RVC,  the 3rd Cheshire RVC, the 4th Cheshire (Cheshire and Derbyshire) RVC and the 5th Cheshire RVC.   The Militia units of the Regiment were the 1st Royal Cheshire Light Infantry Militia and the 2nd Royal Cheshire Militia.

In 1908, as part of the Haldane Reforms, the Militia Battalions were reorganised and restructured forming the 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion and the RVC Battalions were retitled as Battalions of the Regimental Territorial Force.   The 1st Cheshire RVC became the 4th Battalion TF, the 2nd (Earl of Chester's) Cheshire RVC and the 3rd Cheshire RVC amalgamated and became the 5th (Earl of Chester's) Battalion TF, the 4th Cheshire RVC became the 6th Battalion TF and the 5th Cheshire RVC became the 7th Battalion TF.

After the Declaration of War on 4th August 1914 and up to 1st June 1918, the Cheshire Regiment had formed, disbanded or reconstituted 35 Territorial Force, Service, Garrison, Labour, Reserve, Graduated and Young Soldier Battalions.
