Notes:
1. BENETT-DAMPIER transferred to the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) on 22nd February 1915 as published, posthumously, in the London Gazette, Number 29098, page 2500, dated Friday 12th March 1915. 2. BLACKABY, Herts Regt was killed on 17th May 1917 serving with 2nd Bn Herts Regt near Festubert awaiting official word of his commissioning into the Cheshire Regiment (which was received on 22nd May 1915). (Published in London Gazette Number 29177 dated1st June 1915) 3. MELLAND was originally buried in a battlefield grave near "Forward Cottage", north of St Jean, and reburied in New Irish Farm Cemetery in August 1919. 4. BARCLAY was serving with 3rd Battery, Motor Machine Gun Service at the time of his death. He had previously served with 12th Battalion Cheshire Regiment. 5. LOGAN was detached as Commanding Officer of 15th Battalion Durham Light Infantry. 6. NICHOLSON may well have been appointed as 14th Brigade Machine Gun Officer. 7. COBBOLD was killed with his observer, Lt C V G Field, when their aircraft, a BE2c, was brought down by anti-aircraft fire and crashed. Their bodies were originally buried in the German extension of Haubourdin Cemetery and reburied at Cabaret-Rouge Cemetery in January 1924. 8. HARTILL was appointed to the General List (Draft Conducting Officer) on 27th August 1915. He died of prostate cancer at his home at "Gaydon", Copt Heath, Knowle. 9. GOSSET died of ? 10. GIROD was an observer in a BE2c when the aircraft crashed whilst coming into land and he was seriously wounded, later dying of wounds. His pilot, Lt E R Pretyman, survived. GIROD was originally buried in Minia War Cemetery and reburied at Cairo in April 1960. 11. TAPP was accidentally wounded by an exploding rifle grenade near Contalmaison on 18th March 1916. 12. STOTT was wounded near Hebuterne on ? 13. NEWTON and his pilot, 2Lt J A N Ormsby, were killed during an operational flight when their aircraft, a Morane-Saulnier BB biplane, was brought down by anti-aircraft fire. 14. GOSSE was originally buried in a battlefield grave near Templeux-la-Fosse and reburied in Peronne Communal Cemetery in August 1919. 15. HIGGINBOTTOM was the observer in an FE2b fighter when he and his pilot, Lt L Elsley, were brought down by unknown means. Elsley, date of death recorded as 5th April 1917, is buried in Plot VII of Cambrai Cemetery used by the Germans to bury POWs. 16. PICKERING was piloting a BE.2c on a reconnaissance mission in the Basra area when it was brought down, probably in aerial combat. His observer, 2Lt H W Craig, was also killed. 17. GREG was killed whilst piloting a DH.4 on a bombing mission when the aircraft was brought down by enemy aircraft. His observer, Air Mechanic 1st Class R W Robson was seriously injured later dying of his wounds. 18. CASSON was killed when a grenade prematurely exploded during training. 19. PAGE, solo pilot of a SE 5a on a scouting/reconnaissance mission was brought down in unknown circumstances over the Moorslede area and died as a POW in German hands. 20. BELL was an Observer in a DH4 on a recce/bombing mission when his aircraft was brought down. His pilot, Sgt C Comerfield was also killed. They were originally buried in the Iseghem Communal Cemetery (German Extn) and reburied at Harlebeke in July 1924. 21. SALTMARSH was wounded at ? on ? 22. FARRELL died of ? Appointed as Captain in 5th Battalion TF on 25th February 1915 and was attached to the General Staff as a Rail transport Officer in UK Northern Command from 31st August 1915. 23. BROCKS was wounded at ? on ? 24. GAMON was killed when his aircraft, a Sopwith Camel, entered an uncontrollable spin and crashed into the ground at Hornchurch. 25. HAY and his pilot, Lt A R James, where flying their Bristol F.2b fighter to the east of Amiens when it was brought down by unknown means. 26. GLOVER and his observer, Lt C Fitton, were flying the Bristol F.2b fighter near Lamotte and was last seen going down in a spin followed by an enemy aircraft. 27. RAHILL was flying an RE 8 aircraft when it crashed into the ground after a spin at low height. 28. GRESWELL was flying a SE 5a and he failed to return to base after an patrol over enemy lines. 29. STEAD was on a short leave in Calais and was killed when the Germans bombed the area. 30. BRUNDRETT was wounded at Monchy-au-Bois on 21st August 1918. 31. CROWTHER was originally buried in a battlefield grave to the northwest of Lattre and reburied in Aubers Ridge British Cemetery in March 1920. 32. CARPENTER was wounded at Jenlain on 4th November 1918. 33. MELLING was accidentally killed whilst travelling as a passenger in the sidecar of a motorcycle which was in collision with a Daimler motor car at night time. 34. DRAKE died of influenza/pneumonia.. He transferred to the RAF from 3rd (Reserve) Battalion Cheshire Regiment on 18th June 1918 but was later found unfit for flying duties. 35. YORKE was the solo pilot of a Sopwith Pup when is was in a mid-air collision with another Pup piloted by Lt H Croudace. Both pilots were killed. 36. BRUCE died of influenza/pneumonia. 37. BISHOP died of pneumonia at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Marylebone. He had previously served with 1/5th Battalion. He was appointed Staff Captain of HQ 169th Brigade on 6th November 1917. 38. LEICESTER was employed at the Ministry of Labour. 39. CHOLMELEY was washed overboard from the Russian steamship Azod on Lake Onega, on the night of 16th August 1919, while overhauling machine guns which were required for action at daybreak the following morning. 40. MACLEAN died of ? He was seconded to the Egyptian Army (10th Sudanese Battalion). He was originally buried in an isolated grave in the Akono area of Sudan and reburied in Khartoum War Cemetery in 1925. 41. BENGOUGH died of ? He was a member of the General List appointed as Commandant, Cologne Detention Barracks between 1st December 1919 and 11th October 1920. 42. GIMSON died of ? He transferred to FT Reserve from 6th Battalion TF on 2nd May 1918 retaining Honorary rank of Major. 43. PERRIN died of heatstroke. He is buried in the Jullundur Cantonment Cemetery. The Cemetery is currently considered by the CWGC to be unmaintainable. |
