Battalion History

The 1st Battalion Dorsetshire Regiment was formed on 1 July 1881 as part of the Childers Reforms.    On the Declaration of War on 4th August 1914 the 1st Battalion was based at Belfast, part of 15th Infantry Brigade of the 5th Division.   All mobilisation procedures were carried out quickly over the following days and officers and reservist began arriving from Dorchester.   Intensive individual and collective training was carried out and on 14th August 1914 the Battalion embarked for Le Havre, arriving 16th August 1914.   The unit marched to the Brigade concentration area near Gommegneis, south east of Valenciennes, reaching there on 23rd August 1914.   The Battalion was transferred to 14th Brigade in 32nd Division on 7th January 1916.   The Division remained in France and Flanders throughout the war and were engaged in various actions on the Western Front.   At the Armistice the Battalion was based at Avesnes, south of Maubeuge, and marched to Sains on 13th November 1918 in preparation for the march into Germany which commenced on 19th November.     By 30th November the Battalion has marched to Villers-deux-Eglises, south of Charleroi.     The Battalion remained here to 12th December and then marched to Anhee on the River Meuse where they remained until 20th January 1919.  During this time the Battalion continued with military and physical training.  On 12th January 1919 the first draft of 34 men were returned to the UK for demobilisation and n 20th January the Battalion was moved to Namur to guard bridges and barges on the river, whilst demobilisation continued.   The Battalion crossed into Germany by train at Bruel, near Bonn, on 28th January and then marched to Obercassel on 30th January, performing guard, security and general duties.   On 15th March 1919, 5 officers and 137 men were transferred as reinforcements to 15th Battalion Hampshire Regiment as part of the Army of Occupation, and in April 1919 the cadre of the unit, being those men continuing to serve in the Regular Army, was posted to Ebrington Barracks, Londonderry where the unit was reconstituted as a Regular Battalion.

Regimental History

The Dorsetshire Regiment was formed on 1 July 1881 as part of the Childers Reforms which saw the amalgamation of the 39th (Dorsetshire) Regiment of Foot and the 54th (West Norfolk) Regiment of Foot.   These two units became respectively the Regular 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Regiment, with the Regimental Depot based at Depot Barracks, Dorchester.  The 1881 reforms also redesignated the Militia and Rifle Volunteer Corps (RVC) units within the Regimental District of Dorsetshire as Battalions of the Regiment  - the Dorsetshire Militia forming the 3rd (Militia) Battalion and the 1st Dorsetshire RVC forming the 1st Volunteer Battalion.  In 1908, as part of the Haldane Reforms, the Militia Battalion was reorganised and restructured forming the 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion and the 1st Volunteer Battalions formed the 4th Battalion of the Regimental Territorial Force (TF).   After the Declaration of War on 4th August 1914 and at various stages up to 1st June 1918, the order of battle of the Dorchester Regiment constituted of up to 14 Regular, Territorial Force, Service, Home Service, Garrison and Reserve Battalions.

A detailed history of the Dorsetshire Regiment can be viewed here and here.
