Battalion History

On the Declaration of War on 4th August 1914 the 2nd Battalion was based at Poona, India, part of 16th Indian Brigade, Poona Division.   On the 6th November 1914 the Battalion landed at Fao, Persian Gulf, for operations in Mesopotamia, as part of Indian Expeditionary Force ‘D’.   On 29 April 1916 the Battalion was captured at Kut-el-Amara when Major-General Charles Townshend surrendered the British and Indian Forces who were under siege in that city.  During the siege at Kut, 7th December 1915 to 29 April 1916 , a composite battalion, composed of returned wounded and other details from the 2nd Dorsets and 2nd Norfolks, was formed at El Orah.  It was called the “English Composite Battalion” or the “Norsets” and was under command of the 21st Indian Brigade, 7th Indian Division.  It was broken up on 21st July 1916 and the 2nd Battalion Dorsetshire Regiment was re-established.  The Battalion transferred to 9th Indian Brigade, 3rd (Lahore) Division in January 1917 and moved to Egypt in April 1918 and then on to Palestine and Syria.  The Battalion was reconstituted as a Regular Battalion after the war.   A detailed history of the operations and major actions undertaken by the Indian Expeditionary Force 'D' can be viewed here.

Regimental History

The Dorsetshire Regiment was formed on 1 July 1881, part of the Childers Reforms, which saw the amalgamation of the 39th (Dorsetshire) Regiment of Foot and the 54th (West Norfolk) Regiment of Foot.   These two units became respectively the Regular 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Regiment, with the Regimental Depot based at Depot Barracks, Dorchester.  The 1881 reforms also redesignated the Militia and Rifle Volunteer Corps (RVC) units within the Regimental District of Dorsetshire as Battalions of the Regiment  - the Dorsetshire Militia forming the 3rd (Militia) Battalion and the 1st Dorsetshire RVC forming the 1st Volunteer Battalion.  In 1908, as part of the Haldane Reforms, the Militia Battalion was reorganised and restructured forming the 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion and the 1st Volunteer Battalions formed the 4th Battalion of the Regimental Territorial Force (TF).   After the Declaration of War on 4th August 1914 and at various stages up to 1st June 1918, the order of battle of the Dorchester Regiment constituted of up to 14 Regular, Territorial Force, Service, Home Service, Garrison and Reserve Battalions.

A detailed history of the Dorsetshire Regiment can be viewed here and here.
