Battalion History

Formed in 1881 as a regular Battalion from 28th Regiment of Foot.   Full Title - 1st Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment.   On declaration of war on 4th August 1914 the Battalion was stationed at Bordon as part of 3rd Infantry Brigade, 1st Division.   Arrived in France with the BEF on 12th August 1914.   Served in France and Flanders throughout the war.

 

31 Battle Honours, earned at:   France and Flanders 1914 - 1915, Mons, Retreat from Mons, Marne 1914, Aisne 1914, Ypres 1914 and 1917, Langemarck 1914, Gheluvelt, Nonne Boschen, Givenchy 1914, Aubers, Loos, Somme 1916 and 1918, Albert 1916, Bazentin, Pozieres, Flers-Courcelette, Morval, Arras 1918, Messines 1917, Passchendaele, Lys, Estaires, Bethune, Drocourt-Queant, Hindenburg Line, Epehy, St Quentin Canal, Beaurevoir, Selle, Sambre.

 

After the war, the Battalion was posted to Cologne with the Army Of Occupation in Germany for security and garrison duties, then moved to Ireland in December 1920.   Subsequently served in UK, Upper Silesia, Cologne, Egypt, Singapore, India.   The Battalion was serving at Burma on declaration of WW2.   Remained in Burma and India for duration of the War.   Returned to Gloucester in 1947.
