Battalion History

In the Great War the 10th Battalion was formed as a Service Battalion in September 1914 at Bristol as part of "K4".  Full Title - 10th (Service) Battalion.   Initially assigned to 26th Division for training whilst in the UK.   Arrived with the BEF in France on 9th August 1915 and re-assigned to 1st Brigade, 1st Division.   Served in France and Flanders (Loos, Bethune, Somme, Dunkirk and Ypres).

  

Battle Honours - 8, earned at:   France and Flanders 1915 - 18, Loos, Somme 1916, Albert 1916, Bazentin, Pozieres, Flers, Courcelette and Morval.

 

The Battalion was disbanded on 19th February 1918, personnel being transferred to the 1st Battalion and 8th Battalions of the Gloucestershire Regiment and the temporary 13th Entrenching Battalion.

 

The Battalion was reformed on 30th June 1940 for Home Defence duties and converted to 159th Regiment Royal Armoured Corps, in July 1942.   This Regiment was deployed to India in October 1942, and reverted to an Infantry Battalion in March 1943 in India and the unit was re-titled 10th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment.   Assigned to 72nd Infantry Brigade, 36th Division and sent to the Arakan Front, Burma on 1st March 1943.   The Battalion saw active service in Burma to May 1945.   The Battalion was disbanded at Poona in December 1945.
