Battalion History

Formed in 1881 as a regular Battalion from 61st Regiment of Foot.   Full Title - 2nd Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment.   On declaration of WW1 on 4th August 1914, the Battalion was serving in China and returned to UK on 8th November 1914.   Assigned to 81st Infantry Brigade, 27th Division and arrived with the BEF in France on 23rd December 1914.   Served in France and Flanders, Salonika, Bulgaria, South Russia.

 

Battle Honours - 8 earned at:   France and Flanders 1914 - 1915, Ypres 1915, Gravenstafel, St Julien, Frezenberg, Bellewaarde, Macedonia 1915 - 1918 and Struma.

 

During the inter-war years, the Battalion served at India, China, UK and Egypt.

 

On declaration of WW2, the Battalion was stationed at Plymouth, deploying to Cherbourg on 2nd October 1939 for service with the BEF.   Main part of the Battalion was taken POW at Dunkirk but some were evacuated to UK.   The Battalion re-formed at Hereford in late 1940 for Home Defence duties and training for the D-Day and invasion of Europe.   Assigned to 56th Independent Infantry Brigade, 56th (Northumbrian) Division for D-Day landing at Gold Beach.  Brigade re-assigned to 7th Armoured Division on 9th June 1944 for the remainder of the war.  

 

Post-war, the Battalion served at Berlin, UK and Jamaica before amalgamating with 1st Battalion at Jamaica in 1948.
