1.   NORRIS was taken as a POW by the Germans on 29th May 1940 at Ledringhem.

 

Battalion History

Formed at Bristol in 1908 as the 5th Battalion TF.   The Battalion formed 1st and 2nd Line units in August 1914 at Gloucester.   Full Title - 1/5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment (Territorial Force).   Assigned to 145th Infantry Brigade, 48th (1st South Midland) Division in August 1914.   Arrived in France on 29th March 1915.   Served in France and Flanders, and Italy.

 

Battle Honours, 16 earned at:   France and Flanders 1915 - 1917, Ypres 1917, Langemarck 1917, Somme 1916, Albert 1916, Pozieres, Broodseinde, Polygon Wood, Poelcapelle, Cambrai 1918, Hindenburg Line, Beaurevoir, Selle, Sambre, Italy 1917 - 18, and Piave.

 

The Battalion returned to Gloucester in July 1919.   On the declaration of war in 1939 the 5th Battalion was mobilised at Gloucester and arrived in France with the BEF on 15th January 1940.   Fought with the BEF until remains of the Battalion evacuated at Dunkirk on 31st May 1940.   The Battalion re-formed at Hereford in late 1940 for Home Duties and converted to an armoured reconnaissance unit, 43rd Reconnaissance Regiment, with the 43rd (Wessex) Division).
