Based at Mingaladon, near Rangoon, from November 1938.

 

2nd Battalion

Regular Battalion

Remained regular Battalion

 

Based at Plymouth in 3rd Division.   To BEF 2nd October 1939.

February 1940, moved to 145th Brigade, 48th (South Midland) Division TA.   After Dunkirk, Battalion was reconstituted at Hereford and stationed in Devon on Home Defence duties and training for operations post D-Day.   In 1941, joined 47th (London) Division at Winchester.

1/4th Battalion (TF)

Bristol - 1908

Returned to UK March 1919, remained a TF battalion

Reformed as 66th Searchlight Regiment RA, November 1938

 

 

1/5th Battalion (TF)

Gloucester - 1908

Returned to UK July 1919, remained a TF battalion

Remained 5th Battalion TA

Based at Gloucester in 144th Brigade, 48th (South Midland) Division.   To BEF 5th January 1940.

After Dunkirk the Battalion was reconstituted and was stationed in Cornwall on Home Defence duties.   In June 1941 it converted to 43rd Reconnaissance Regiment of 43rd (Wessex) Division.   In 1947, the unit reformed as 5th Battalion Gloucester Regiment TA.

1/6th Battalion (TF)

Bristol - 1908

Returned to UK March 1920, remained TF battalion

Reformed as 44th Royal Tank Regiment November 1941.  Later redesignated 44th Tank Regiment

 

 

7th (Service Battalion

Bristol - August 1914

Disbanded in Turkey September 1919

 

Reformed as a TA Battalion in 1938 as the second-line reserve for 5th Battalion TA.

 

8th (Service) Battalion

Bristol - September 1914

Disbanded at Gloucester May 1919

 

Reformed 1st January 1940 for Home Defence duties.

 

9th (Service) Battalion

Bristol - September 1914

Disbanded in Germany November 1919

 

Reformed 1st January 1940 as a Garrison Battalion in Northern Ireland.

 

10th (Service) Battalion

Bristol - September 1914

Disbanded in France February 1918

 

Reformed at Bristol on 4th July 1940, initially for Home Defence duties.

Reformed as 159th Regiment RAC in July 1942 and posted to India.   Reverted to 10th Bn Glos Regt on 1st April 1943 with 72nd Infantry Brigade, 36th Division.   To Burma in February 1944.

11th (Reserve) Battalion

Woolwich - October 1914

Previously formed 16th Training Reserve Battalion September 1916

 

Reformed in early 1940 as 50th (Holding) Battalion as a holding and training unit.

Based at Ludlow, Leominster, Shorncliffe, Chatham and Hornsea, for Home Defence duties.

 

70th (Young Soldier)

Battalion

1940

 

 

Formed in 1940 as a holding and training unit for young soldiers too young for active service.   Home defence duties only.

Disbanded in 1942.
