LEWIS C V died of post-operative appendicitis at Weymouth on 18th August whilst attending the Army Signalling School at Blandford. 2. SALATHIEL was wounded at Mametz Wood, Somme on 7th July 1916. 3. LLOYD was wounded at Pilckem Ridge near Ypres on 31st July 1917. 4. JENKINS was wounded near Pilckem, near Ypres on 1st August 1917. 5. JONES was detached from the Army Chaplains' Department. He was wounded near Boesinghe, north of Ypres on 24th March 1917. 5. ANGUS was detached from the Welsh Regiment. |
Battalion History |
The Battalion was formed at Brecon on 5th December 1914
by the Welsh National Executive Committee.
Full title: 11th (Service) Battalion South Wales Borders
(2nd Gwent). The Battalion commenced training for active service at Colwyn Bay Camp on 19th January 1915 and was assigned to 115th Infantry Brigade of the 38th (Welsh) Division on 29th April 1915. The Battalion moved to Winchester in August 1915 where it remained until 3rd December 1915 when the Battalion embarked for Le Havre. On arrival with the BEF in France the Battalion entrained initially to Aire-sur-la-Lys then marched to Witternesse, to the south-west of Aire, to commence training for trench warfare. The Battalion served in France and Flanders throughout the war and a detailed list of engagements and operations can be viewed in the history of the 38th (Welsh) Division. The Battalion was disbanded on 27th February 1918 with officers being transferred mostly to other SWB Battalions and the majority of men forming the 2nd Entrenching Battalion. The Battalion lost 13 officers, 2 officers from another Regiment and 283 other ranks. |

The South Wales Borderers was formed
on 1st July 1881, as part
of the Childers
Reforms,
which saw the two separate Battalions of the
24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot become the Regular 1st and 2nd Battalions of the
retitled Regiment, with the
Regimental Depot based at The Barracks, Brecon.
