Battalion History

On the Declaration of War on 4th August 1914 the Battalion was based at Tientsin, China.   On the 23rd September 1914 the Battalion landed at Lao Shan Bay for operations against the German territory of Tsingtao.   The Battalion then embarked at Hong Kong for Plymouth on 4th December 1914, arriving 12th January 1915.   Assigned to 87th Infantry Brigade of 29th Division, and moved to billets at Rugby.   On 17th March 1915, the Battalion embarked at Avonmouth for operations at Gallipoli landing at Cape Helles on  25th April 1915.   The Battalion was evacuated from Gallipoli on 8th January 1916 then moved to Egypt on 11th January 1916.

The Battalion was sent on to France, arriving at Marseilles 15 March 1916.   It remained in France and Flanders for the remainder of the war being engaged in operations in 1916 at The Battle of Albert, The Battle of the Transloy Ridges.  In 1917 at The First Battle of the Scarpe, The Second Battle of the Scarpe, The Third Battle of the Scarpe, The Battle of Langemarck, The Battle of Broodseinde, The Battle of Poelcapelle, The Battle of Cambrai.  In 1918 at The Battle of Estaires, The Battle of Messines 1918, The Battle of Hazebrouck, The Defence of Nieppe Forest, The Battle of Bailleul, The Action of Outtersteene Ridge, The Capture of Ploegsteert and Hill 63, The Battle of Ypres 1918, The Battle of Courtrai.

As part of the Army of Occupation in Germany, the Battalion entered Germany on 4th December 1918 at Malmedy and formally entered Cologne on 13th December 1918.   In the new year, after many men were demobilised the Battalion, at a strength of 7 officers and 80 men, moved to Mulheim and on 4th April 1919 embarked at Dunkirk for the UK, arriving in Brecon on 5th April 1919.

During the course of the war the Battalion lost 72 officers, 11 officers of other Regiments and 1413 other ranks.

Regimental History

The South Wales Borderers was formed on 1st July 1881, as part of the Childers Reforms, which saw the two separate Battalions of the 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot become the Regular 1st and 2nd Battalions of the retitled Regiment, with the Regimental Depot based at The Barracks, Brecon.

The 1881 reforms also redesignated the Militia and Rifle Volunteer Corps (RVC) within the Regimental District as numbered Battalions of the Regiment - the 3rd (Militia) Battalion was formed from the Royal South Wales Borderers Militia and the 4th (Militia) Battalion from the Royal Montgomeryshire Rifles.  The four (later five) Rifle Volunteer Corps, the 1st Brecknockshire RVC, 1st Monmouthshire RVC, 2nd Monmouthshire RVC, 3rd Monmouthshire RVC and 1st Montgomeryshire RVC were retitled as 4th to 8th Volunteer Battalions respectively.

The 1908 Haldane Reforms reorganised the Regimental Militia and Volunteer Battalions, with the 3rd Militia Battalion forming the 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion.   The 4th (Militia) Battalion was transferred to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers with the Montgomeryshire Volunteer Battalion.   The three Monmouthshire Volunteer Battalions were reorganised as the newly formed Monmouthshire Regiment of the Territorial Force (TF).   The 4th Volunteer Battalion became the 1st Brecknockshire Battalion of the Regimental Territorial Force (TF).   After the Declaration of War on 4th August 1914 and up to 1st July 1918, the South Wales Borderers had formed, disbanded, reorganised or reconstituted 20 Regular, Territorial Force, Service, Reserve, Graduated and Young Soldier Battalions.

A detailed history of the South Wales Borderers can be viewed here.
