Battalion History |
The Battalion
was formed at Brecon on 7th August 1914
as part of "K1". Full title: 4th
(Service) Battalion South Wales Borderers.
The Battalion assembled at Parkhouse Camp on Salisbury Plain at the end of August 1914 and assigned to 40th Infantry Brigade of 13th (Western) Division. The Battalion then moved to Chiseldon in October 1914 and on to Cirencester in early December 1914. Moved to Woking in March 1915 for Brigade/Divisional intensive training. The Battalion embarked at Avonmouth on 29th June 1915 and proceeded to Mudros, arriving on 12th July 1915. The Battalion then landed at Gallipoli on 15th July 1915. The Battalion served at Gallipoli, Egypt and Mesopotamia. At the Armistice the Battalion was based near Kirkuk, Kurdistan. The Battalion was not selected for Army of Occupation duties and moved to the Daila River, north of Baghdad where demobilisation commenced. In early February 1919, with the strength of the Battalion at about 14 officers and 200 men, it was moved south to Amara for Garrison duties and continuing demobilisation. The Battalion served temporarily in Karachi and Rawalpindi prior to returning to Brecon on 19th August 1919 for disbandment. The Battalion lost 24 officers, 4 officers from other Regiments and 558 other ranks. |
Regimental History |
The South Wales Borderers
was formed on 1st July 1881, as part of the Childers
Reforms, which saw the two separate
Battalions of the 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot become
the Regular 1st and 2nd Battalions of the retitled Regiment, with
the Regimental Depot based at The Barracks, Brecon.
