Battalion History |
3rd (Reserve) Battalion was formed at
Brecon in 1908 as the Regular
Reserve
Battalion of the Regiment, from the 3rd (Militia) Battalion (formerly
Royal
South Wales Borderers Militia) . Full Title - 3rd
(Reserve) Battalion South Wales Borderers. Its main duty
was to
receive recruits from the Depot of the Regiment and provide basic
military and combat training before they were posted to either the
1st or 2nd Battalion of the Regiment for active service.
Duties on mobilisation were UK Home and Coastal Defence and to
continue to provide training for recruits. On the Declaration of War on 4th August 1914 the Battalion was stationed at Brecon, earmarked for Home/Coastal Defence and training duties. On 8th August 1914 the Battalion moved to Pembroke Dock in its mobilisation location. On 19th November 1914 four Companies were transferred to a Mobile Reserve Brigade at Edinburgh, returning to Pembroke Dock on 11th March 1915. The Battalion moved to the Hightown area of Liverpool on 9th June 1915 for duty with the Mersey Defences where it was based for the remainder of the war. The Battalion returned to Brecon in early 1919. |

The South Wales Borderers was formed
on 1st July 1881, as part
of the Childers
Reforms,
which saw the two separate Battalions of the
24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot become the Regular 1st and 2nd Battalions of the
retitled Regiment, with the
Regimental Depot based at The Barracks, Brecon.
