Battalion History |
The 4th Battalion TF was formed at Bristol in 1908 following the Territorial and Reserve Forces Act 1907, as the 4th (City of Bristol) Battalion Territorial Force (formerly the 1st (City of Bristol) Volunteer Battalion). The Battalion formed a 1st Line unit (1/4th Battalion) and a 2nd Line unit (2/4th Battalion) at Bristol in September 1914. A 3rd Line unit (3/4th Battalion) was formed at Bristol in early 1915.
The 1/4th Battalion was assigned to 144th Infantry Brigade, 48th (1st South Midland) Division in August 1914 and arrived with the BEF in France on 29th March 1915. Served in France and Flanders, and Italy.
12 Battle Honours, earned at: France and Flanders 1915 - 1917, Ypres 1917, Langemarck 1917, Somme 1916, Albert 1916, Bazentin, Pozieres, Broodseinde, Poelcapelle, Italy 1917 - 18, Piave, Vittorio-Veneto.
After the war, the Battalion served at Cornedo via Malo before returning to Bristol in March 1919.
Reformed and restructured as 66th Searchlight Regiment Royal Artillery in November 1938, as part of the major TA reorganisation of that year. |
