Battalion History |
The War Office sanctioned the creation of the Battalion on 27th August 1914 and it was formed and assembled at Colston Hall Bristol on 4th September 1914 by the local Citizens' Recruiting Committee, chaired by Sir Hubert Ashman. Initially titled the New Bristol Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment and known as "Bristol's Own". It recruited specifically from the professional and commercial men of the city of Bristol. Lt Col W E P Burges, Gloucestershire Regiment (Retired), was appointed to command the Battalion in mid-September 1914 and was brought out of retirement. Also appointed at this time were Capt W A R Blennerhassett, late Notts and Derby Regiment, as Second in Command and Capt R J Kerr, Gloucestershire Regiment, as Adjutant. The Battalion attained full established strength on 5th October1914. The unit was accepted and taken over for all purposes by the War Office on 23rd June 1915. Full Title - 12th (Service) Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment (Bristol's Own). Initially assigned to 95th Infantry Brigade, 32nd Division for training whilst in the UK. Arrived with the BEF in France on 21st November 1915, and the unit with the 95th Brigade was re-assigned to 5th Division on 26th December 1915. The Battalion served with distinction in France and Flanders (Arras, Somme, Bethune, Arras and Ypres) to 1st December 1917, then in Italy (Piave) to early April 1918 when it was redeployed returned to France (Merville and Somme). The Battalion was disbanded on 6th October 1918, with personnel personnel being transferred to other units of 5th Division. The Battalion earned 22 Battle Honours during the Great War: France and Flanders 1915 - 1918, Italy 1917- 1918, Ypres 1917, Somme 1916 and 1918, Albert 1918, Delville Wood, Guillemont, Flers-Courcelette, Morval, Bapaume 1918, Arras 1917 and 1918, Vimy 1917, Scarpe 1917, Polygon Wood, Broodseinde, Poelcapelle, Passchendaele, Lys, Hazebrouck, Hindenburg Line, Epehy, Canal du Nord. A detailed history of the Battalion can be viewed here. |
Regimental History |
The Gloucestershire Regiment was formed on 1st July 1881 as part of the Childers Reforms which saw the amalgamation of the 28th (North Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot and the 61st (South Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot. These two units became respectively the regular 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Regiment, with the Regimental Depot based at Horfield Barracks, Bristol. The 1881 reforms also redesignated the Militia and Rifle Volunteer Corps (RVC) units within the Regimental District of Gloucestershire as Battalions of the Regiment - the Royal South Gloucestershire Militia forming the 3rd (Militia) Battalion and the Royal North Gloucestershire Militia forming the 4th Militia Battalion. The 1st (City of Bristol) Gloucestershire Rifle Volunteers formed the 1st (City of Bristol) Volunteer Battalion and the 2nd Gloucestershire Rifle Volunteers forming the 2nd Volunteer Battalion. In 1908, as part of the Haldane Reforms, the two Militia Battalions were reorganised and restructured forming the 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion and the three Volunteer Battalions (the 3rd Volunteer Battalion had been formed in 1900) were reformed the 4th, 5th and 6th Battalions of the Regimental Territorial Force (TF). After the Declaration of War on 4th August 1914 and at various stages up to 1st July 1918, the Gloucestershire Regiment had formed, disbanded or re-constituted up to 27 Regular, Territorial Force, Service and Reserve Battalions. A detailed history of the Gloucestershire Regiment can be viewed here, here and here. |
Battalion Memorial (The Gloster Cross), near Longueval, France. Lt Col M Archer-Shee, DSO, MP, was the Commanding Officer of the Battalion at the time of its first major offensive actions during the Battle of The Somme. A time at which many of its original members became casualties. Though he left the Battalion in early 1917 to devote more time to his Parliamentary responsibilities, he soon regretted his decision and later returned to active service to command other battalions. In 1921, at his own expense, he erected an oak memorial cross at the crossroads to the west of the village of Longueval, overlooking the site of the Battalion's first attack on 29th July 1916, towards Delville Wood. It was purely a personal act that he considered did not need to be publicised and so, few of the Battalion's Old Comrades Association knew anything of it, until the battlefield was re-visited by the OCA in 1930. The "Gloster Cross" was born and remained in-situ until it was removed by unknown persons during World War 2. |
