Battalion History

The Battalion was formed at Horfield Barracks Bristol as a Service Battalion in August 1914, part of "K2", under Lt Col J S Hobbs.   Full Title - 8th (Service) Battalion.   The Battalion assembled and concentrated at Perham Down and was placed under command of 57th Infantry Brigade, part of 19th (Western) Division.   The Battalion was moved to Weston-super-Mare in December 1914 before returning to Tidworth in March 1915 to continue and complete intensive combat training.    In July 1915 the Division was ordered to reinforce the BEF and the Battalion, with a strength of 29 officers,  51 Warrant Officers and Sergeants and 938 other ranks, sailed from Folkestone Docks with other 57th Brigade units on 18th July 1915 arriving at Boulogne the same evening.   After staging at Boulogne the Brigade Group was moved via St Omer to concentrate at  Bayenghem on 20th July 1915 and by the 24th July the Brigade Group had marched to Renescure where it remained until 30th July.   On that date the Brigade Group marched to St Venant and then on 31st July to the Merville/Estaires area.   Between 9th and 16th August the Battalion was placed under instruction of the Indian Meerut Division in trench warfare.   On 27th August the Brigade Group marched to the area of Les Lobes in preparation of taking over front line trenches to the south of Richebourg L'Avoue.   On 14th September the Brigade was relieved by 56th Brigade and was moved into billets at Locon, northeast of Bethune.

The Battalion, with the Brigade/Division, remained in France and Flanders for the duration of the war fighting at Festubert, Somme, Ypres, Ancre, Messines ,Ypres, Cambrai, Arras, Champagne, and Cambrai, and a detailed history of the 19th (Western) Division during the war can be viewed here.

The Battalion earned 23 Battle Honours during the Great War:   France and Flanders 1915 - 1918,  Aisne 1918,  Ypres 1917,  Somme 1916 - 1918,  Albert 1916,  Pozieres,  Ancre Heights,  Ancre 1916,  Arras 1918,  Messines 1917 - 1918, Menin Road,  Polygon Wood,  Broodseinde,  Passchendaele,  Cambrai 1918,  St Quentin,  Bapaume 1918,  Lys,  Bailleul,  Kemmel,  Hindenburg Lines,  Selle,  Sambre.

The Battalion was disbanded at Gloucester in May 1919.

Regimental History

The Gloucestershire Regiment was formed on 1st July 1881 as part of the Childers Reforms which saw the amalgamation of the 28th (North Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot and the 61st (South Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot.   These two units became respectively the regular 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Regiment, with the Regimental Depot based at Horfield Barracks, Bristol.  The 1881 reforms also redesignated the Militia and Rifle Volunteer Corps (RVC) units within the Regimental District of Gloucestershire as Battalions of the Regiment  - the Royal South Gloucestershire Militia forming the 3rd (Militia) Battalion and the Royal North Gloucestershire Militia forming the 4th Militia Battalion.    The 1st (City of Bristol) Gloucestershire Rifle Volunteers formed the 1st (City of Bristol) Volunteer Battalion and the 2nd Gloucestershire Rifle Volunteers forming the 2nd Volunteer Battalion.

In 1908, as part of the Haldane Reforms, the two Militia Battalions were reorganised and restructured forming the 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion and the three Volunteer Battalions (the 3rd Volunteer Battalion had been formed in 1900) were reformed as the 4th, 5th and 6th Battalions of the Regimental Territorial Force (TF).   After the Declaration of War on 4th August 1914 and at various stages up to 1st July 1918, the Gloucestershire Regiment had formed, disbanded or reconstituted up to 27 Regular, Territorial Force, Service and Reserve Battalions.

A detailed history of the Gloucestershire Regiment can be viewed here, here and here.
