Battalion History

The 4th Battalion TF was formed at Bristol in 1908 following the Territorial and Reserve Forces Act 1907, as the 4th (City of Bristol) Battalion Territorial Force (formerly the 1st (City of Bristol) Volunteer Battalion).   The Battalion formed a 1st Line unit (1/4th Battalion) and a 2nd Line unit 2/4th Battalion TF at Bristol in September 1914.   A 3rd Line unit (3/4th Battalion) was later formed at Bristol in early 1915.

Full Title - 2/4th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment (Territorial Force).   The Battalion was assigned to 183rd Infantry Brigade, 61st (2nd South Midland) Division in January 1915.   The Battalion was moved to and camped at Epping in August 1915 to undergo intensive individual.   In October 1915 the Battalion was moved to the Brentwood area to continue training where it remained unitil early in 1916.   The Battalion was moved to Tidworth in the New Year for final training before orders were received for deployment with the Division to the BEF.   The Battalion departed Tidworth for Southampton Docks on 23rd May 1916 and embarked on SS Margeurite and SS Belerophan on 24th May for Le Harve.   After concentrating near Le Havre the Battalion was moved by train to Aire and La Pierriere, southwest of Merville, on 27th May and the to the Festubert area on the 30th May to commence training in trench combat warfare.

The Battalion served in France and Flanders throughout the war with the Division (Fromelles, Fauquissart,  Somme,  Peronne,  St Quentin,  Ypres,  Arras,  Cambrai) until it was disbanded in France on 20th February 1918.   Personnel were transferred to 2/5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment and to the 24th Entrenching Battalion.

The Battalion earned 4 Battle Honours, at:   France and Flanders 1915 - 1918,  Ypres 1917,  Langemarck 1917,  Cambrai 1917.

Regimental History

The Gloucestershire Regiment was formed on 1st July 1881 as part of the Childers Reforms which saw the amalgamation of the 28th (North Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot and the 61st (South Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot.   These two units became respectively the regular 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Regiment, with the Regimental Depot based at Horfield Barracks, Bristol.  The 1881 reforms also redesignated the Militia and Rifle Volunteer Corps (RVC) units within the Regimental District of Gloucestershire as Battalions of the Regiment  - the Royal South Gloucestershire Militia forming the 3rd (Militia) Battalion and the Royal North Gloucestershire Militia forming the 4th Militia Battalion.    The 1st (City of Bristol) Gloucestershire Rifle Volunteers formed the 1st (City of Bristol) Volunteer Battalion and the 2nd Gloucestershire Rifle Volunteers forming the 2nd Volunteer Battalion.

In 1908, as part of the Haldane Reforms, the two Militia Battalions were reorganised and restructured forming the 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion and the three Volunteer Battalions (the 3rd Volunteer Battalion had been formed in 1900) were reformed the 4th, 5th and 6th Battalions of the Regimental Territorial Force (TF).   After the Declaration of War on 4th August 1914 and at various stages up to 1st July 1918, the Gloucestershire Regiment had formed, disbanded or re-constituted up to 27 Regular, Territorial Force, Service and Reserve Battalions.

Detailed history of the Gloucestershire Regiment can be viewed here, here and here.
